Welcome to Diefenbunker - Canada's cold war museum

This audio guide takes you on a tour four stories below ground.

It lasts approximately 1 hour.

Also, please note that it is pretty chilly in certain parts of the bunker. Please bring a sweater.

Executive Director's Welcome Message

Housed four stories underground in a Cold War military communication centre, this remarkable facility is the only one of its kind in Canada and, arguably, in the world.

Designed sixty years ago as the centre for Canada’s defence against nuclear attack, the museum and its stories play a crucial role in understanding our past — and in imagining our collective future. This massive, atomic-age artifact reminds us how close humanity came to global annihilation. With that in mind, our mission has never been clearer: to champion a new form of international engagement; one of collaboration, connection, and communication.

Our dedicated team at the Bunker is ready to share the extraordinary stories of this site with you through our guided tours, exhibitions, special programming, and events. You’ll find that the Diefenbunker is an amazing immersive space, where you can’t help but think about our future while you step back in time through the blast doors.

Today, I welcome you to the Diefenbunker and invite you not only to visit the Museum, but to extend your visit through our online resources — you can visit our collection online, explore upcoming events, and learn more about Canada and the Cold War through our blog. Enjoy your visit underground! We hope it’s a blast.
