The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation had an important role in the event of a nuclear war. In its emergency capacity, the Bunker would have housed 11 CBC staff to carry out Emergency Broadcast duties. As sirens sounded across the country, citizens would have gathered into their home or community shelters. From there, the nation was advised to listen on their battery-operated radios to CBC on the emergency broadcast frequencies. Every broadcast on those frequencies came out of this room:
“This is a real emergency, I repeat, this is a real emergency. This is the Canadian Emergency Broadcasting System. An enemy attack on North America has been detected. Sirens are now sounding or have sounded the ATTACK WARNING. Listen for further instructions.”
Notice how the equipment in the production studio rests on rubber mats. These would have absorbed the shock of a nuclear blast, steadying the equipment.
